John Warkentin - Update Print E-mail

Dear Colleagues,

It is with great sadness that I must inform you that Professor Emeritus John Warkentin passed away yesterday, after a prolonged period in the hospital recovering from aspiratory pneumonia.

John retired in 1997 after a 37 year career in our department at McMaster, which included a 3-year period as Chair from 1987-90.  He was one of Canada's better known physical organic chemists, having made many important contributions to carbene chemistry in particular.

Details of the visitation and funeral arrangements are not known yet, but should be available in the next day or so.  I will pass them along as soon as I learn of them.
