bem2013

It is with a profound sense of loss and sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our friend and colleague Dr. Brian McCarry.  Brian served as Chair of the Department from 1990-96 and again for a second time from 2004-12. He also served as Acting Chair of the Department of Biology at McMaster from 2011-13, stepping down from the position only a week ago to embark on a 2-year admin/research leave – the first he’d had since stepping down from his first term as Chair of the Chemistry Department in 1996 and only the third leave of his 37-year career at McMaster.

Brian has had an inestimable impact on our department, the university, and on the broader Hamilton community as well.  A true leader by example, he held the Stephen A. Jarislowsky Chair in Environment and Health at McMaster since 1999, and was Director of the McMaster Occupational and Environmental Health Laboratory from 2006-13.  He has served as Chair of Clean Air Hamilton continuously since 2000 and of the Hamilton Air Monitoring Network since 2003, and has been involved in various capacities with the Bay Area Restoration Council from 1997-2008, including a term on the Board of Directors.  He was the recipient of a Canadian Environment Award in Climate Change in 2005, and was named the 26th recipient of the Victor Cecilioni Award for Hamilton Environmentalist of the Year , also in 2005. He will be sorely missed by us all in the department, particularly his graduate students, David, Vi, Fan, Paul, Roger, Ash and Sujan.

Brian leaves behind his partner Twyla, their daughter Aislinn, and sons Adrian and Tom, to whom our hearts reach out. He was 67 years old.
